Connecticut Garage Door Repair is a referral service that connects Connecticut homeowners with participating garage door companies, including for emergency garage door repair. We can't promise after-hours service or a response time: availability depends on which participating companies cover your area and when you call. What we can do is help you make the situation safe while you wait.

What counts as a garage door emergency

These situations are worth a same-day or after-hours call if a company is available:

  • The door is stuck open and the garage connects to the house, or holds tools and equipment you can't leave exposed overnight.
  • A car is trapped inside and you need it for work, school, or a medical appointment.
  • The door fell or slammed shut, or is hanging crooked and could drop.
  • A cable snapped or the door came off track while partly open.
  • The door was hit and won't close.

Make it safe first

Unplug the opener so nobody runs it by accident, and keep people, pets, and cars out from under the door. Don't touch the springs, the cables, or the brackets at the bottom corners of the door; they're under high tension.

Only pull the red emergency release when the door is fully closed. On a door with a broken spring or cable, pulling the release with the door open can let the full weight of the door drop at once. If the door is stuck open and you can't secure it, close the door between the garage and the house, move valuables, and wait for the technician.

Connecticut's emergency exception to the three-day cancellation rule

Normally, Connecticut gives you until midnight of the third business day to cancel a home improvement contract, and you don't owe for work done in that window if you cancel. The Department of Consumer Protection's guide notes one exception: a bona fide emergency where the homeowner starts the contract and writes, in their own words, that they need the work immediately to meet an emergency.

That's reasonable for a truly urgent repair, but it means you give up the cooling-off period. Don't sign an emergency waiver for work that can wait until morning, and still get the HIC number and a written price first.

After-hours prices

Most companies charge more for evening, weekend, and holiday calls, either a higher rate or a flat extra fee. Ask what it is before the technician comes out. If the door is closed, the car is out, and the house is secure, waiting for regular hours is usually cheaper and gives you time to compare quotes.

When to call right away

  • The door is stuck open and you can't secure the garage.
  • Your car is trapped and you need it.
  • The door fell, is crooked, or a cable snapped while it was open.
  • Someone was hurt by the door, after you've called 911 if needed.
  • The door won't stop reversing and won't close at night.

What emergency garage door repair costs

The repair itself costs about what it would during the day; HomeAdvisor's June 2026 ranges are $150 to $350 for springs, $100 to $400 for cables, and $124 to $370 for opener repair. The difference is the after-hours charge, which varies by company. Ask for it up front, and ask whether the regular trip fee is folded in.

  • Time of the call: nights, weekends, and holidays cost more.
  • What failed: springs and cables are the common emergency repairs.
  • Securing vs. full repair: sometimes the right call at night is to secure the door and finish in the morning.
  • Parts on the truck: uncommon spring sizes may need a second visit.

What to do right now

  1. Unplug the opener and keep everyone out from under the door.
  2. If the door is closed, leave it closed. Only use the emergency release with the door fully closed.
  3. If it's stuck open, lock the door between the garage and the house and move valuables.
  4. From a safe distance, note what you see: a gap in a spring, a loose cable, a crooked door.
  5. Call, describe the situation, and ask about availability and after-hours fees.

Questions to ask on an urgent call

  • What is your Connecticut HIC registration number?
  • What is the after-hours fee, and is it waived or credited if I go ahead with the repair?
  • Can you secure the door tonight and finish during regular hours if that's cheaper?
  • Do you carry the springs and cables my door is likely to need?
  • Will I get a written price before you start?

What you can safely check vs. when to call

The safe homeowner checks are short on purpose. Springs, cables, and the brackets they attach to hold enough tension to cause serious injury, so anything involving them belongs to a technician.

What to expect

What an urgent garage door call usually involves

Every door is different. These are the stages most residential garage door repairs go through.

  1. You describe the situation

Stuck open, car trapped, door fell, cable snapped; plus the door's width and whether you heard a bang.

  2. Make it safe

The technician secures the door so it can't drop, then inspects springs, cables, rollers, track, and opener.

  3. A written price

Even on an urgent call, ask for the HIC number and a written price. Connecticut's emergency exception to the three-day cancellation applies only when you request the work and state the emergency in your own writing.

  4. Repair or secure

Common springs and cables are often fixed on the spot; otherwise the door is secured closed and the repair finished when parts arrive.

  5. Test

The door is balanced and the opener's auto-reverse and photo eyes are tested before the technician leaves.

How the referral works

How our garage door referral line works

  1. You call the number on this site

Have the address or ZIP code ready, plus what the door is doing: stuck, crooked, reversing, off its track, or making a bang when it tried to open.

  2. Your call is routed to a participating company

Your call is connected with a participating independent garage door company that serves your area, if one is available. We don't send anyone ourselves, and the companies in our name-only directory are not our participants.

  3. You deal with that company directly

The company inspects the door, quotes the job, and does any work you agree to under its own business name, HIC registration, and insurance. You decide whether to hire them. There is no obligation.

Good to know: availability depends on which participating companies cover your ZIP code and when you call. Whoever you hire, ask for their Connecticut HIC registration number and look it up on eLicense before you sign. Our guide to checking a garage door company shows how.

Questions

Emergency Garage Door Repair questions

Is there 24-hour garage door repair in Connecticut?

Some garage door companies take after-hours calls, but availability varies by area and time. We can't promise 24/7 service or a response time; call and ask. Meanwhile, unplug the opener and keep everyone out from under the door.

My garage door is stuck open. What should I do?

Unplug the opener and keep people and cars out from under it. Don't pull the emergency release while the door is open, because a door with a broken spring or cable can drop. Lock the door between the garage and the house, move valuables, and call for a technician.

How do I get my car out with a broken garage door spring?

Don't try to lift the door by hand or with the opener; without the spring, the door is very heavy and can fall. Call and explain that your car is trapped; a technician can replace the spring or safely open and secure the door.

How much does emergency garage door repair cost?

The repair itself costs about the same as during the day, with springs typically $150 to $350 and cables $100 to $400 per HomeAdvisor. After-hours calls add a fee or a higher rate that varies by company, so ask before the technician comes out.

Can I cancel an emergency garage door repair contract in Connecticut?

Normally you have three business days to cancel a home improvement contract. The exception is a bona fide emergency where you request the work and write in your own words that you need it immediately; then the cancellation right doesn't apply. Only sign that for work that truly can't wait.
